A Swiss artist settled in Rome from 1776, Abraham-Louis Ducros is one of the great watercolourists of the Grand Tour. A specialist in monumental landscape, he quickly established himself among foreign patrons with works combining topographical precision and atmospheric breadth. His Views of Rome and its Environs, published with the engraver Giovanni Volpato in 1780, secured his reputation across Europe.
The Villa Mondragone, a former papal summer residence at Frascati, was one of the emblematic sites of the Roman countryside. Ducros captures its many layers: Renaissance architecture, ancient fragments in the foreground, figures in eighteenth-century dress. The portico opens theatrically onto the landscape, revealing an artist at the height of his powers.
